Park Ranger responsibilities include:
1. Enforce park rules, regulations, and federal/state laws to ensure visitor safety and resource protection.
2. Conduct regular patrols of park grounds via vehicle, foot, boat, or horseback to monitor conditions and visitor activities.
3. Perform search and rescue operations for lost or injured visitors in wilderness settings.
4. Provide first aid, CPR, and emergency medical response until advanced medical personnel arrive.
5. Educate visitors about park features, conservation practices, wildlife safety, and Leave No Trace principles.
6. Monitor wildlife populations and report on ecological conditions, including invasive species and fire hazards.
7. Maintain and inspect park facilities, trails, campgrounds, and recreational areas for safety and cleanliness.
8. Issue permits for camping, fishing, hunting, and special use activities in accordance with park policies.
9. Assist in wildfire suppression efforts and implement controlled burn protocols when necessary.
10. Prepare detailed incident reports, daily activity logs, and law enforcement documentation.
1. High school diploma or GED equivalent (minimum requirement for most state/federal positions).
2. Valid U.S. driver's license with clean driving record.
3. Successful completion of Seasonal Law Enforcement Training Program (SLETP) or equivalent peace officer certification.
4. Physical fitness to pass demanding agility tests and perform strenuous outdoor activities in all weather conditions.
5. First Aid, CPR, and Wilderness First Responder certifications current at time of hire.
6. U.S. citizenship and ability to pass extensive background investigation, drug screening, and psychological evaluation.
7. Demonstrated knowledge of natural resource management, conservation principles, and outdoor recreation practices.
8. Ability to operate 4WD vehicles, ATVs, boats, and other park maintenance equipment safely.
Preferred Qualifications
1. Associate's or Bachelor's degree in Park Management, Environmental Science, Criminal Justice, Forestry, or related field.
2. Previous experience as a Park Ranger, Law Enforcement Officer, or Emergency Medical Technician.
3. Bilingual proficiency in Spanish and English, particularly for parks in southwestern and western states.
4. Specialized training in wildland firefighting (S-130/S-190 certifications) or technical rescue operations.
5. Experience with wildlife management, including human-bear conflict mitigation or endangered species protection.
6. Knowledge of specific park regions, such as desert survival skills for southwestern parks or avalanche safety for mountain parks.
7. Familiarity with National Incident Management System (NIMS) protocols and incident command structure.
