What is a Machinist?
A Machinist is a highly skilled manufacturing professional who specializes in operating and programming various machine tools, such as lathes, mills, grinders, and CNC (Computer Numerical Control) equipment, to produce precision metal parts and components. They work from blueprints, technical drawings, and digital models to manufacture everything from simple bolts to complex aerospace components with exacting tolerances. Machinists must possess strong mathematical skills, mechanical aptitude, and attention to detail to ensure every piece meets strict quality standards. This role requires both traditional manual machining skills and modern computer-controlled machining expertise, making machinists vital to numerous industries including automotive, aerospace, defense, and medical device manufacturing.
What does a Machinist do?
Machinists perform a wide range of tasks including reading and interpreting engineering blueprints and specifications, selecting appropriate materials and cutting tools, setting up and operating both manual and CNC machines, and performing precision measurements using instruments like micrometers and calipers. They program CNC machines using CAD/CAM software, monitor machining processes to ensure quality, make adjustments to machine settings for optimal performance, and perform routine maintenance on equipment. Machinists also inspect finished parts for defects, deburr and finish components, and maintain detailed production records. Their work requires constant attention to safety protocols and quality control standards to produce parts that meet exact dimensional and surface finish requirements.
