Job Overview
We are seeking a creative and detail-oriented Movie Makeup Artist to join our production team. This role involves designing and applying makeup for actors to enhance characters, create special effects, and ensure continuity throughout filming. The ideal candidate will collaborate closely with directors, costume designers, and cinematographers to achieve the desired visual storytelling through transformative makeup artistry.
Movie Makeup Artist responsibilities include:
1. Design and execute character makeup looks based on script requirements and director's vision
2. Create special effects makeup including aging, injuries, fantasy creatures, and prosthetic applications
3. Maintain makeup continuity throughout production, documenting looks with photos and detailed notes
4. Collaborate with hair and costume departments to ensure cohesive character appearance
5. Manage makeup inventory, order supplies, and maintain sanitation standards according to industry protocols
6. Work efficiently under time constraints while maintaining quality standards
7. Adapt makeup techniques for different lighting conditions and camera formats
1. 3+ years professional experience in film or television makeup artistry
2. Portfolio demonstrating range of character makeup and special effects work
3. Proficiency in airbrush techniques, prosthetic application, and aging makeup
4. Knowledge of HD and 4K camera makeup requirements
5. Valid cosmetology or esthetician license
6. Understanding of on-set protocols and union regulations (IATSE experience preferred)
7. Ability to work 12+ hour days and travel for location shoots
Preferred Qualifications
1. Bachelor's degree in Theatre Arts, Makeup Artistry, or related field
2. Experience working on feature films or network television productions
3. Membership in Make-Up Artists & Hair Stylists Guild (Local 706)
4. Proficiency with silicone prosthetics and advanced sculpting techniques
5. Experience with period-specific makeup styles and historical accuracy
6. Knowledge of different film genres and their specific makeup requirements
Bonus Skills
1. Digital makeup design skills using Photoshop or similar software
2. Experience with animatronic or creature makeup effects
