What is a Coroner?

A Coroner is an elected or appointed government official who investigates deaths that are sudden, violent, unexplained, or occur under suspicious circumstances. Unlike medical examiners, who are typically physicians, coroners may not always have medical training but are empowered to determine the cause and manner of death, authorize autopsies, and issue death certificates. Their work serves both legal and public health purposes, ensuring deaths are properly classified and investigated in accordance with state laws.

What does a Coroner do?

Coroners conduct death investigations by visiting scenes, examining bodies, reviewing medical records, and interviewing witnesses or family members. They determine whether an autopsy is needed and may order one performed by a pathologist. Coroners also complete official documentation, including death certificates, and testify in court regarding their findings. In some jurisdictions, they oversee inquests or serve as liaisons between law enforcement, medical professionals, and the public to provide transparency and accountability in death investigations.
