Job Overview
The Sterile Processing Technician is responsible for the decontamination, preparation, assembly, sterilization, and distribution of surgical instruments and medical equipment. This critical role ensures all sterile processing procedures meet established standards and protocols to support patient safety and quality care in healthcare facilities.
1. Perform thorough decontamination of surgical instruments and equipment using appropriate cleaning techniques and solutions
2. Inspect, assemble, and wrap instrument trays according to established protocols and surgeon preference cards
3. Operate and monitor sterilization equipment including autoclaves, ethylene oxide (ETO) sterilizers, and low-temperature sterilization systems
4. Maintain accurate documentation of sterilization cycles and biological monitoring results
5. Distribute sterile supplies to appropriate clinical areas and maintain inventory control
6. Follow strict infection control protocols and maintain a clean work environment
7. Participate in quality assurance programs and adhere to AAMI, AORN, and Joint Commission standards
1. High School Diploma or GED equivalent
2. Current Certified Registered Central Service Technician (CRCST) certification
3. Minimum 1 year of experience in sterile processing department
4. Comprehensive knowledge of surgical instruments and medical equipment
5. Understanding of sterilization principles and infection control practices
6. Ability to lift and move equipment weighing up to 50 pounds
7. Basic computer skills for inventory management systems
Preferred Qualifications
1. Associate's degree in Sterile Processing or related healthcare field
2. 3+ years of experience in hospital sterile processing department
3. Additional certification in Instrument Specialist (CIS) or Healthcare Leadership (CHL)
4. Experience with complex instrumentation for orthopedic, neurosurgical, or cardiovascular procedures
5. Knowledge of FDA regulations and OSHA standards for sterile processing
6. Previous experience in teaching or training new technicians
