What is a Podiatrist?

A Podiatrist, also known as a Doctor of Podiatric Medicine (DPM), is a medical specialist focused exclusively on the diagnosis, treatment, and prevention of disorders related to the feet, ankles, and lower extremities. Podiatrists complete extensive medical training, including four years of podiatric medical school and residency programs, to become experts in foot and ankle health. They play a critical role in the healthcare system by addressing issues ranging from common ailments like ingrown toenails and heel pain to complex conditions such as fractures, diabetes-related foot problems, and structural deformities. Their expertise ensures that patients receive comprehensive care tailored to maintaining mobility, reducing pain, and preventing long-term complications.

What does a Podiatrist do?

Podiatrists perform a wide range of clinical and surgical tasks to address foot and ankle health. They conduct physical examinations, order and interpret diagnostic tests like X-rays or MRIs, and develop personalized treatment plans for conditions such as arthritis, sports injuries, infections, and diabetic ulcers. Common procedures include prescribing orthotics, performing minor surgeries (e.g., correcting bunions or removing ingrown toenails), and managing chronic issues like plantar fasciitis. Additionally, they educate patients on preventive care, footwear choices, and lifestyle adjustments to promote long-term foot health. For many patients, especially those with diabetes or mobility challenges, podiatrists are essential for preventing serious complications and ensuring an active, pain-free life.
