What is a Ophthalmologist?

An Ophthalmologist is a medical physician who specializes in the diagnosis, treatment, and prevention of diseases and disorders related to the eyes and visual system. They complete extensive medical training, including four years of medical school and a residency program focused specifically on ophthalmology, and are licensed to practice medicine and perform surgery. Ophthalmologists are distinct from optometrists and opticians in that they are fully trained medical doctors capable of handling complex eye conditions, surgical interventions, and systemic diseases that manifest in the eyes.
