What is a Oncologist?
An oncologist is a specialized physician who focuses on the prevention, diagnosis, and treatment of various types of cancer. These medical professionals undergo extensive training beyond medical school, typically completing a residency in internal medicine or pediatrics followed by a fellowship in oncology. Oncologists are experts in understanding the complex nature of cancer, including its causes, progression, and various treatment modalities. They work closely with patients and their families to provide compassionate care while navigating the challenges of cancer treatment. Oncologists may further specialize in specific areas such as medical oncology (chemotherapy and targeted therapies), radiation oncology, or surgical oncology, each playing a distinct role in comprehensive cancer care.
What does a Oncologist do?
Oncologists perform a wide range of critical functions in cancer care. They conduct thorough patient evaluations, order and interpret diagnostic tests including biopsies and imaging studies, and establish precise cancer diagnoses and staging. Oncologists develop and implement individualized treatment plans that may include chemotherapy, immunotherapy, targeted therapy, hormone therapy, or referral for radiation or surgical interventions. They monitor treatment responses, manage side effects, and adjust therapies as needed. Additionally, oncologists provide palliative care to improve quality of life, offer emotional support to patients and families, coordinate with multidisciplinary teams including surgeons, radiologists, and nurses, participate in clinical trials and research, and provide long-term follow-up care for cancer survivors. They also educate patients about their conditions and treatment options while maintaining detailed medical records throughout the care continuum.
