What is a NICU Nurse?
A NICU (Neonatal Intensive Care Unit) Nurse is a highly specialized registered nurse who cares for newborn infants with a variety of medical conditions, including prematurity, birth defects, infections, or other critical health issues. These professionals work in a fast-paced, technology-driven environment where they monitor vulnerable babies around the clock, administer medications, and provide life-sustaining treatments. They serve as a crucial link between the infant, family, and medical team, offering both clinical expertise and emotional support during a stressful time. NICU Nurses require advanced training beyond standard nursing education to handle complex equipment and make critical decisions under pressure.
What does a NICU Nurse do?
NICU Nurses perform a wide range of clinical duties, including assessing vital signs, administering IV medications, managing ventilators, and providing nutrition through feeding tubes. They closely monitor infants for changes in condition, respond to emergencies, and collaborate with neonatologists and other specialists to implement care plans. Beyond medical tasks, they educate and support parents on how to care for their fragile newborns, including feeding techniques and developmental care. They also document patient progress, ensure a sterile environment to prevent infections, and advocate for the needs of their tiny patients throughout their hospital stay.
