What is a Neuropsychologist?

A Neuropsychologist is a specialized clinical psychologist with expertise in how brain structures and systems influence cognitive functions, emotions, and behaviors. They hold a doctoral degree (Ph.D. or Psy.D.) and are licensed to practice, often with additional board certification in neuropsychology. Unlike general psychologists, they focus specifically on assessing and treating conditions like traumatic brain injuries, dementia, stroke, ADHD, and learning disabilities, using their knowledge of neuroscience to interpret how neurological issues manifest in daily functioning.

What does a Neuropsychologist do?

Neuropsychologists conduct detailed neuropsychological evaluations using standardized tests to assess memory, attention, language, problem-solving, and other cognitive abilities. They analyze test results to diagnose neurological conditions and create comprehensive reports that guide medical treatment, rehabilitation, or educational accommodations. Additionally, they provide therapy or interventions to help patients manage cognitive deficits, collaborate with healthcare teams (e.g., neurologists or therapists), and may engage in research to advance understanding of brain-behavior relationships. In legal or school settings, they might offer expert testimony or develop support plans based on their findings.
