Job Overview
The Emergency Room Technician (ER Tech) provides critical support to emergency department medical staff by assisting with patient care, performing clinical procedures, and maintaining equipment and supplies. This fast-paced role requires quick thinking, technical proficiency, and compassion while working alongside physicians and nurses to deliver emergency medical services to patients in acute situations.
ER Tech responsibilities include:
1. Assist emergency department staff with patient assessments, vital signs monitoring, and documentation
2. Perform EKGs, phlebotomy, specimen collection, and point-of-care testing
3. Assist with trauma resuscitation, CPR, and emergency procedures under physician supervision
4. Apply splints, slings, and basic wound dressings
5. Transport patients within the emergency department and to other hospital units
6. Maintain and stock emergency equipment, including crash carts and procedure trays
7. Provide patient comfort measures and assist with activities of daily living
8. Maintain compliance with HIPAA and patient confidentiality regulations
9. Follow infection control protocols and maintain sterile techniques when required
1. High school diploma or GED equivalent
2. Current BLS (Basic Life Support) certification from American Heart Association
3. State-approved Emergency Medical Technician (EMT) certification or completion of ER Tech training program
4. Minimum 1 year of emergency department or pre-hospital emergency care experience
5. Proficiency in basic medical terminology and emergency procedures
6. Ability to stand for extended periods and lift/move patients (50+ lbs)
7. Availability to work rotating shifts, including nights, weekends, and holidays
Preferred Qualifications
1. Certified Emergency Medical Technician (EMT) with current state licensure
2. 2+ years of experience in hospital emergency department setting
3. Additional certifications: ACLS (Advanced Cardiac Life Support), PALS (Pediatric Advanced Life Support)
4. Experience with electronic medical records (Epic, Cerner, or Meditech)
5. Phlebotomy certification and experience with IV starts
6. Associate's degree in emergency medical services or related field
7. Bilingual abilities (Spanish-English preferred in most US regions)
Bonus Skills
1. Certified Nursing Assistant (CNA) certification
2. Experience with trauma center level I or II emergency departments
3. Knowledge of emergency department triage protocols
4. Experience with behavioral health patients and de-escalation techniques
5. Previous military medical training (68W, Corpsman, or equivalent)
6. Proficiency in advanced airway management assistance
7. Experience with emergency department specific equipment (Zoll monitors, rapid infusers, etc.)
