What is a Cardiovascular Perfusionist?

A Cardiovascular Perfusionist is an allied health professional specifically trained to operate extracorporeal circulation equipment, primarily the heart-lung machine, during open-heart surgeries and other complex medical procedures. These highly skilled clinicians are responsible for managing the patient's physiological status when their heart and lungs are bypassed, ensuring adequate blood circulation, oxygenation, and temperature regulation throughout the operation. Cardiovascular Perfusionists work exclusively in hospital settings as vital members of cardiac surgical teams, collaborating closely with surgeons, anesthesiologists, and nurses to maintain patient stability during critical interventions.

What does a Cardiovascular Perfusionist do?

Cardiovascular Perfusionists perform several critical functions during surgical procedures. They operate the heart-lung machine to circulate and oxygenate the patient's blood while the heart is stopped, continuously monitoring and adjusting blood flow, temperature, oxygenation, and chemical balance throughout the operation. They also administer prescribed medications, blood products, and anesthetic agents via the extracorporeal circuit as directed by the surgical team. Additionally, Cardiovascular Perfusionists operate auxiliary equipment such as intra-aortic balloon pumps, ventricular assist devices, and extracorporeal membrane oxygenation (ECMO) systems for patients requiring prolonged circulatory support. They maintain detailed records of the procedure and patient responses, and participate in pre-operative planning and post-operative patient management discussions with the surgical team.

Job Overview
