What is a Behavioral Technician?
A Behavioral Technician is a trained paraprofessional who works directly with clients—often children or adults with autism spectrum disorder (ASD) or other behavioral challenges—to implement therapeutic interventions designed by a Board Certified Behavior Analyst (BCBA). They use principles of applied behavior analysis (ABA) to teach skills, reduce problematic behaviors, and collect data on client progress. Behavioral Technicians typically work in clinics, schools, homes, or community settings, serving as hands-on support for individuals and families navigating behavioral health needs.
What does a Behavioral Technician do?
Behavioral Technicians carry out a range of responsibilities centered on client care and data-driven support. They follow behavior intervention plans (BIPs) created by supervisors, provide one-on-one ABA therapy sessions, and use techniques such as positive reinforcement, prompting, and shaping to help clients develop communication, social, and daily living skills. They also record detailed data on client behaviors and progress, communicate with families and team members about updates, and assist in maintaining a safe and structured therapeutic environment. Their work is essential for implementing evidence-based practices and achieving meaningful behavioral outcomes.
