What is a Drafter?

A Drafter, also known as a CAD Drafter or Draftsperson, is a skilled technical professional who specializes in creating detailed drawings, blueprints, and schematics using computer-aided design (CAD) software. They work closely with architects, engineers, and designers to convert conceptual designs and technical specifications into precise visual representations that guide the construction, manufacturing, or installation processes. Drafters serve as critical intermediaries between design concepts and physical realization, ensuring that all technical requirements and standards are accurately documented for project teams and stakeholders.

What does a Drafter do?

Drafters primarily develop detailed technical drawings and plans based on rough sketches, specifications, and calculations provided by engineers or architects. They use CAD software to create 2D and 3D models that include dimensions, materials, procedures, and other critical details. Drafters also revise drawings based on feedback, ensure compliance with industry standards and codes, and prepare multiple versions of documents for different project phases. They typically collaborate with engineering teams to resolve design conflicts, maintain drawing databases, and produce documentation for manufacturing, construction, or permitting purposes. Additional responsibilities may include calculating material requirements, reviewing designs for accuracy, and staying updated with the latest CAD technologies and drafting standards.
