Guidance Counselor responsibilities include:
1. Provide individual and group counseling sessions to address academic, career, and personal/social development needs
2. Develop and implement comprehensive school counseling programs aligned with ASCA National Model standards
3. Conduct academic planning and course selection guidance for students at various grade levels
4. Administer and interpret career assessments and interest inventories to support career exploration
5. Facilitate college readiness programs including college applications, financial aid, and scholarship guidance
6. Collaborate with teachers and parents to address student behavioral and academic concerns
7. Maintain confidential student records and documentation in compliance with FERPA regulations
8. Implement crisis intervention protocols and provide support during emergency situations
9. Facilitate classroom guidance lessons on topics such as bullying prevention, study skills, and social-emotional learning
10. Analyze student data to identify achievement gaps and develop intervention strategies
1. Master's degree in School Counseling, Counseling Psychology, or related field from an accredited institution
2. Valid state certification/licensure as a School Counselor (requirements vary by state)
3. Minimum 3 years of experience in educational counseling or related student services role
4. Knowledge of ASCA National Model and comprehensive school counseling programs
5. Understanding of FERPA, ethical guidelines, and confidentiality requirements in educational settings
6. Experience with student information systems (e.g., PowerSchool, Naviance, or similar platforms)
7. Strong assessment and interpretation skills for academic and career counseling
8. Crisis intervention training and experience with threat assessment protocols
9. Demonstrated ability to work with diverse student populations and cultural backgrounds
10. Excellent communication and interpersonal skills for parent-teacher consultations
Preferred Qualifications
1. National Certified Counselor (NCC) or Certified School Counselor (CSC) credential
2. Experience with specific student populations (special education, gifted, ESL, or at-risk youth)
3. Bilingual proficiency, particularly in Spanish or other languages common in the student population
4. Training in restorative practices, trauma-informed care, or social-emotional learning programs
5. Experience with college and career readiness programs such as AVID or college access initiatives
6. Knowledge of state-specific graduation requirements and educational standards
7. Experience in data analysis and using data to drive counseling program decisions
8. Previous work in specific grade levels (elementary, middle, or high school counseling)
9. Membership in professional organizations (ASCA, ACA, or state counseling associations)
10. Experience with 504 plans and participation in IEP meetings
