What is a Biochemist?
A Biochemist is a scientist who specializes in studying the chemical processes and molecular mechanisms that occur within living organisms. They examine the structure, function, and interactions of biological molecules such as proteins, nucleic acids, lipids, and carbohydrates to understand how these components contribute to cellular functions, metabolism, and overall biological systems. Biochemists often work in research laboratories, pharmaceutical companies, academic institutions, or government agencies, applying their expertise to solve complex biological problems and support advancements in medicine, agriculture, and environmental science.
What does a Biochemist do?
Biochemists conduct experiments to analyze biological samples, isolate and characterize molecules, and investigate metabolic pathways. They design and perform laboratory tests using techniques like chromatography, spectroscopy, and electrophoresis to study chemical reactions in cells. Biochemists also develop new drugs, vaccines, or diagnostic tools by researching molecular targets and testing compound efficacy. They document findings, write research papers, and collaborate with other scientists to advance knowledge in fields like genetics, immunology, or biotechnology. Additionally, they may oversee lab safety, manage equipment, and ensure compliance with regulatory standards in their work.
