What is a Pipefitter?
A Pipefitter is a specialized trades professional responsible for working with high and low-pressure piping systems used in manufacturing, industrial, commercial, and residential settings. They interpret blueprints and specifications to layout, assemble, install, and maintain pipe systems that carry water, steam, chemicals, or fuel. Unlike plumbers who primarily work with standard water and waste systems, Pipefitters often handle complex systems in power plants, refineries, and HVAC systems, requiring knowledge of welding, metallurgy, and advanced mathematics. Their expertise ensures that piping systems are safe, efficient, and compliant with strict industry codes and standards.
What does a Pipefitter do?
Pipefitters perform a range of critical tasks including reading and interpreting blueprints and specifications to determine the layout of piping systems. They measure, cut, thread, bend, and assemble pipes using various tools and techniques such as welding, brazing, soldering, and threading. Pipefitters also install valves, fixtures, and other piping components, and test systems for leaks and proper pressure. They maintain and repair existing systems, troubleshoot issues, and ensure compliance with safety regulations and building codes. In industrial settings, they may work on systems that transport chemicals, gases, or steam, requiring precision and adherence to strict safety protocols to prevent hazards.
