A Lineman is responsible for installing, maintaining, and repairing electrical power systems and telecommunications cables, both overhead and underground. This critical role ensures the reliable delivery of electricity to residential, commercial, and industrial customers across the United States, often requiring work in challenging conditions and emergency response to outages caused by weather or equipment failure.
Lineman responsibilities include:
1. Install, maintain, and repair overhead and underground electrical power lines and cables.
2. String new wire and perform pole climbing and tower scaling using appropriate safety equipment.
3. Troubleshoot electrical faults and perform emergency repairs during power outages and storm events.
4. Operate and maintain heavy equipment such as bucket trucks, digger derricks, and cable pullers.
5. Perform routine inspections and maintenance of poles, towers, transformers, and other line equipment.
6. Adhere to strict safety protocols, including OSHA 1910.269 standards and utility-specific safety rules.
7. Read and interpret construction schematics, work orders, and system maps.
1. High School Diploma or GED.
2. Completion of a formal Lineman apprenticeship program or equivalent military training.
3. Valid Class A Commercial Driver's License (CDL) with a clean driving record.
4. Demonstrated ability to climb poles and work at heights up to 100 feet.
5. Proficiency in rubber glove and hot stick work methods for live-line maintenance.
6. Physical stamina to perform demanding labor in all weather conditions.
7. Knowledge of electrical theory, distribution systems, and National Electrical Safety Code (NESC) standards.
Preferred Qualifications
1. 3+ years of experience as a Journeyman Lineman in a US utility setting.
2. Experience with both distribution (up to 34.5kV) and transmission (69kV+) line work.
3. Certification in CPR/First Aid and OSHA 10/30-hour safety training.
4. Experience operating a digger derrick and aerial bucket truck.
5. Background in storm response and mutual assistance programs.
6. Familiarity with underground residential distribution (URD) systems and splicing.
7. Previous work with a investor-owned utility (IOU) or municipal power company.
